Publisher's Summary

What is it about the top tech product companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix, and Tesla that enables their record of consistent innovation?

Most people think it's because these companies are somehow able to find and attract a level of talent that makes this innovation possible. But the real advantage these companies have is not so much who they hire, but rather how they enable their people to work together to solve hard problems and create extraordinary products.

As legendary Silicon Valley coach - and coach to the founders of several of today's leading tech companies - Bill Campbell said, "Leadership is about recognizing that there's a greatness in everyone, and your job is to create an environment where that greatness can emerge". The goal of Empowered is to provide you, as a leader of product management, product design, or engineering, with everything you'll need to create just such an environment.

A natural companion to the best seller Inspired, Empowered tackles head-on the reason why most companies fail to truly leverage the potential of their people to innovate: product leadership.

Good but not as much as Inspired

I found lot of the points being repeated and not nearly as insightful as Inspired...

Must read for all the Leaders!

Must read for all the Leaders especially for those who are keen to understand what is 'Agile', 'Product Management' is all about!

Busts lots of common myth around Agile mindset and how it is not just about the 'Delivery' part of the Product Management and the importance of the mindset for the crucial 'Discovery' part as well! Clearly differentiates the 'Empowered Product Teams' from the 'Feature Teams' which are commonly disguised as 'Product Teams'! Loved the way he explained the concepts of 'Serving the Business' vs 'Serving the customers' (Solving the customer problems).

Marty beautifully describes what is 'Empowerment' of teams and touches literally every aspect of building such teams and organisations! Sourcing, Hiring, interviewing, onboarding, coaching, topography, separation, outsourcing, metrics, OKRs and so on.

The two words he keeps on reiterating throughout the book are - Missionary vs Mercenary teams!

There are a number of case studies, real life examples throughout the book that give us a lot of insights into the transformation journeys of world class organisations.

Overall a masterpiece on 'Product Leadership'!
