Bernard was born in Scotland to a Scottish father and a German mother. He has lived in New Zealand for most of his life apart from travel to Europe, the UK and the USA. He is a graduate of the University of Otago (Geography) and the Auckland University of Technology (Creative Writing). His first novel, Schist, was published in New Zealand and he has published two books of poetry. His poetry has also appeared in various journals. Bernard enjoys teaching, reading, photography and hiking. He lives in Christchurch with his wife.
