harley Valera is an award-winning author dedicated to preserving the firsthand stories of American military veterans. His debut book, My Father’s War: Memories from Our Honored WWII Soldiers, was inspired by discovering—years after his father’s death—that his own WWII veteran father had served nearly four years in silence with the 8th Air Force in Europe. This prompted Valera to interview veterans from all branches and both theaters of the war, capturing their personal accounts and rare photos before they were lost.
A companion documentary, featuring intimate interviews with eight WWII veterans drawn from the book’s stories, is soon to be released, bringing these powerful, firsthand narratives to life on screen.
His second book, A Military Mustang: The Extraordinary Life of Captain John W. Arens (co-authored with Arens), chronicles a remarkable 37-year career across four wars and three military branches. From Merchant Marine in WWII convoys, to Airborne Army Ranger in Korea, Navy Arctic diver trained by SEALs, and ship captain in Vietnam and beyond, Arens rose from enlisted ranks to officer as a true “Military Mustang.”
Valera has been featured on TV, radio, newspapers, and magazines nationwide. He writes articles and blogs on WWII history, real estate, and aviation. A licensed commercial pilot and resident of southwest Florida, he lives with his wife, Cheryl.
