Daniel Kondo is a Brazilian author, illustrator and graphic designer based in Punta del Este, Uruguay. For more than two decades, he has created picturebooks in which text, image, typography, pacing, format and binding become integral parts of the narrative.
At the core of his work is the idea that a book is not merely a container for stories, but a language of its own. In this respect, it resonates with the tradition of creators such as Bruno Munari and Katsumi Komagata, whose books explore format, paper, sequence and physical structure as narrative elements. In books such as Big Bad Wolf with a Toothache, the book itself becomes part of the story. Other projects transform songs by artists including Gilberto Gil and Djavan into visual narratives.
His work brings together literature, music, poetry, illustration and editorial design, exploring themes such as childhood, humor, memory, environmental issues and Brazilian culture.
He is the recipient of the Jabuti Prize and the New Horizons Award at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. His books have also been recognized by the Bologna Children's Book Fair, the World Illustration Awards, Communication Arts, the Society of Illustrators in New York, and UNESCO's Chair on Reading.
For Daniel Kondo, the picturebook is not only a publishing genre, but a form of visual thinking in which text, image and design tell the same story.
