David Williams is a retired university professor who for more than thirty years taught survey courses in U.S history along with upper division and graduate courses in Old South, Civil War era, and Georgia history. He is seen here with his wife, Teresa Crisp Williams, with whom he co-authored several books, book chapters, and articles. This historical marker, for which they wrote the text, is located at the north end of Broad Street in Columbus, Georgia. It commemorates one of many women's riots that occurred across the South during the Civil War, including all of Georgia's major cities and many of its smaller communities. These and other incidents reflecting social currents that undermined the Confederate war effort are discussed in his book BITTERLY DIVIDED: THE SOUTH'S INNER CIVIL WAR and more recently GEORGIA'S CIVIL WAR: CONFLICT ON THE HOME FRONT.
