Leann Hackman-Carty is dedicated to building a safer, stronger, and more disaster-resilient world for families, businesses, and communities. A recognized leader in economic development, resilience, and recovery, she brings a unique blend of strategic insight, entrepreneurial drive, and cross-sector collaboration to every project she leads.
Throughout her career, Leann has forged partnerships across industries and borders, anticipated emerging business and community needs, and championed innovative approaches to delivering services and driving impact. Early in her career, she served for more than a decade as Executive Assistant to the Mayor of Calgary in Community & Economic Development. She later managed political campaigns, led major initiatives in the corporate, public, and nonprofit sectors, supported U.S. states with business development, hosted international trade delegations, advanced women’s entrepreneurship through GroYourBiz, and contributed to numerous high-profile investment projects.
Since 2009, Leann has served as CEO of Economic Developers Alberta (EDA) and leads MYD Global, specializing in disaster preparedness, response, and economic recovery. She has played key roles in Canada’s two costliest disasters, the 2013 Southern Alberta floods and the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires, while also delivering national resilience training, authoring resources for communities in crisis, and receiving multiple awards for leadership and service, including national recognition for community resilience.
Her Master Your Disaster series, available in print, audio, and Spanish, equips individuals, families, and communities with practical tools to prepare for and navigate crises of all kinds.
Leann holds bachelor’s degrees in Political Science/Sociology and Social Work, along with certificates in marketing and economic development. She also holds a professional economic developer designation.
In 2022, Leann unexpectedly became a widow while raising two teenagers. This experience shifted not only her personal life, but also deepened her professional purpose. Having walked through profound loss herself, she brings an added level of compassion, understanding, and lived wisdom to her work. She has since expanded her focus to include tools and resources that support the mental wellbeing of both community leaders and widows, blending her expertise in crisis management with a heartfelt commitment to helping others rebuild their lives and rediscover hope.
She lives in Calgary, Canada, and enjoys traveling and learning about cultures from around the world.
