Story
Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo have pioneered the use of randomized control trials in development economics. Work based on these principles, supervised by the Poverty Action Lab, is being carried out in dozens of countries. Drawing on this and their 15 years of research from Chile to India, Kenya to Indonesia, they have identified wholly new aspects of the behavior of poor people, their needs, and the way that aid or financial investment can affect their lives. Their work defies certain presumptions: that microfinance is a cure-all, that schooling equals learning....

I'm a social activist and policy consultant. this book helped me correct many wrong notions I had about the poor and how to help them. with several examples and studies the authors proposed a roadmap that is simple and cost effective to implement. they also enlist the pitfalls and limitations of many of these strategies to eliminate poverty

An insightful journey through the economic history of nations. It has changed my way of looking at government policies. As an Indian I couldn't explain to people why govt promoting multinational Indian based companies like reliance and Adani is bad for india. now I know exactly why. thank you

Story
Figuring out how to deal with today's critical economic problems is perhaps the great challenge of our time. Much greater than space travel, what is at stake is the whole idea of the good life as we have known it. Immigration and inequality, globalisation and technological disruption, slowing growth and accelerating climate change - these are sources of great anxiety across the world. The resources to address these challenges are there - what we lack are ideas that will help us jump the wall of disagreement and distrust that divides us.

Story
What explains the spreading backlash against the global elite? In this revelatory investigation, Anand Giridharadas takes us into the inner sanctums of a new gilded age, showing how the elite follow a 'win-win' logic, fighting for equality and justice any way they can - except ways that threaten their position at the top. But why should our gravest problems be solved by consultancies, technology companies and corporate-sponsored charities instead of public institutions and elected officials? Why should we rely on scraps from the winners?

eye opener for millennials

it's a perfect book for millennials to read and understand the present in order to shape the further. there is too much pressure to aspire to be millionaires and entrepreneurs instead of doing something good for society. this books presents the harsh reality of how people become billionaires and then work at maintaining the status quo. I short for people who are unaware, it's like taking the red pill and waking up from the matrix of economic deception.
