A Promised Land: The First Half Delivered Well!
Reviewed: 05-12-20
Obama's greatest asset is in executing well and communicating far better. Though he humbly understates his capability to entertain utopian ideas and execute them well with his almost natural ability of pragmatic roadmapping and the astuteness to execute flawlessly through the selection of the right committed people, more in the lines of Team of Rivals of Abraham Lincoln, that strength permeates throughout the book! Though he has stated his assessment of the global leaders be his own compatriots like Trump, Clintons, Joe Biden, ... or Sarkozy, Angela Merkel, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Sonia & Rahul Gandhi, ... at those specific periods, he has identified the divisive forces like Hindutva in India, Al Queda, Extreme Right Wings all over the world!
The book ends with the success of Operation Neptune Spear leading to capture & termination of Osama bin Laden paving the way to crave for the delivery of the next installment!

How can a blind person learn to see with her tongue or a deaf person learn to hear with his skin? What does a baby born without a nose tell us about our sensory machinery? Might we someday control a robot with our thoughts? And what does any of this have to do with why we dream? The answers to these questions are not right in front of our eyes; they're right behind our eyes. This book is not simply about what the brain is but what it does. Covering decades of research to the present day, Livewired also presents new findings from Eagleman's own research.

The book starts and ends with the catch-line apt for the era of the Fantastic, Fiesty & Famous Four: Now, it is easier to be billionaires and harder to be millionaires. Scott Galloway shares his personal journey with very interesting and critical insights to which he is privy to. He also illustrates how is easier to be billionaires for very lucky but very very very few and harder for the less lucky few millionaires. Most of us still have to struggle extremely hard to make hundreds of thousands! It's a practical roadmap traversed by him.

I was searching for the literature addressing Economical, Political & Anthropological aspects of the state of the nations. Till now, we had to settle for the literature addressing either of those aspects of the nations. And once in a while, one would come across the literature addressing any two of them. Even then, generally, anthropological aspect was substituted by history, which in my view is very poor, partial & biased cousin!
I think, this book will be the basis of all future literature addressing the state & progress of the nations!

Story
In this landmark audiobook, David Epstein shows that the way to excel is by sampling widely, gaining a breadth of experiences, taking detours, experimenting relentlessly, juggling many interests - in other words, by developing range. Studying the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors and scientists, Epstein discovered that in most fields - especially those that are complex and unpredictable - generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. They are also more creative, more agile and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see.

If you follow the headlines, the world in the 21st century appears to be sinking into chaos, hatred and irrationality. Yet, as Steven Pinker shows, if you follow the trendlines, you discover that our lives have become longer, healthier, safer and more prosperous - not just in the West but worldwide. Such progress is no accident: it's the gift of a coherent value system that many of us embrace without even realising it. These are the values of the Enlightenment: of reason, science, humanism and progress.

Story
Spread through the public in the form of popular stories, ideas can go viral and move markets - whether it's the belief that tech stocks can only go up or that housing prices never fall. Whether true or false, stories like these - transmitted by word of mouth, by the news media, and increasingly by social media - drive the economy by driving our decisions about how and where to invest, how much to spend and save, and more. But despite the obvious importance of such stories, most economists have paid little attention to them. Narrative Economics sets out to change that.

Story
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Comprehensive, Definitive & the Most Relevant!

The most definitive book on 1918 Influenza, which the author, John M Barry started writing in 1997 to sensitize the nations about impending gloom which almost everybody in the know were aware. But 1997 H5N1 outbreak happened and the author and every virologist, epidemiologist, ... knew that it can happen anytime. The book was published in 2004, but whatever concerns he had raised about our,- including all the institutions in the world,- preparedness he had expected in 2004, ... it is certain, we are not yet there, even now! Very sad!
The following are the most critical aspects of RNA Virus pandemic.
Swarm: When the RNA Virus attacks a single cell, it replicates and erupts out with 1,000s of Quasi-Species RNA viruses, due to mutations, to attack the next cell. It all happens just within a single body from one cell to another probably in few seconds to minutes.
Passage: Due to the above, the virus may get more and more virulent and violent, exponentially, after passing through a few patients!
So when such a pandemic erupts, not only doctors are grappling with tremendous known unknowns and many more times unknown unknowns too.
Since this issue is so scary even for the virologists, epidemiologists, ... whole community of health professionals ... and can't be solved with the present collective intellect, knowledge, wisdom, technology ... of entire humanity!
It can't be expressed. It becomes more difficult when people without any knowledge start offering HCQ or something else as the most potent weapon against the virus and some others gun for Antivaccine lobby!
But still, transparency coming out of courage of conviction is very much needed out of leadership to address the issue.
Our world leaders from different domains have to focus on their respective domains and come out with the solutions to address their own fields and simultaneously they need to engage the other leaders to address their own fields in the most synergistic manner. This need to be done out of utmost sincerity, integrity, honesty and altruism.

A Breakthrough Concept. Disruptive!
Reviewed: 21-03-20
Clayton Christensen dedicated his life to Disruptive Innovation and helped countless organizations to solve Innovators' Dilemma.
Job Theory proposed by him is culmination of at least 2 decades of his relentless work on disruptive innovation. The seeds of Job Theory were quite evident in Innovator's Dilemma through his insights on why the milkshakes were hired. He had to put in the two decades to propose Job Theory framework and its success with many organisations who sought consultancy at his firm InnoSight. Job Theory helps focus on the customers' needs rather than correlation of available data hence the success of disruptive innovations doesn't depend on luck.
Job Theory takes the firms to the next level of abstraction and finds parallels in Ted Levitt's Marketing Myopia, which companies still continue to suffer. In my opinion, present business management practices suffer from too many inadequacies to gain from Job Theory because the execution based on Job Theory is going to be extremely challenging. But the startups are going to gain tremendously by winning the competition against luck!
