    धनानंद वासना में बहकर एक नर्तकी युवती को आत्मदाह करने को मजबूर कर देता है जिसकी प्रतिक्रिया में पब्बता और अमात्य राक्षस भी विद्रोह में हो जाते हैं. धनानंद को नर्तकी लड़की की हत्या पर कोई खेद नहीं होता. उसका पिता जब उसकी मृत शरीर वापस मांगता है तो वो उल्टा उसकी लाश को महल के दीवार से लटकाने का आदेश दे बैठता है. और उसके पिता के श्राप देने पर उससे स्वयं अपने हाथों से गला काट देता है. अपने पिता से अत्याधिक खिन्न होने पर पब्बता चाणक्य से मिलता है और उन्हें भाग जाने में सहायता करता है.
