 小学５年生のさおりは、犬を飼いたくて仕方ない。母親に「犬を飼いたい」とねだってみるも、「どうせ世話をしなくなる」などと言われてしまい、とても飼えそうにない。
そこでさおりは、近所に住んでいて犬が大好きなおばあちゃんに犬を飼ってもらおうと思いつく。そうすれば、会いたいときにいつでも会いにいけるからだ。
さっそくおばあちゃんの家に行き、「おばあちゃん、また犬を飼わない？」と提案するが、おばあちゃんは「うん」と言ってくれない。
そこには、おばあちゃんが過去に経験した悲しい出来事があった･･････。
