本作作者菊池寛は、小説家で、劇作家で、ジャーナリスト、東京市会議だったり、大映の社長だったり。文藝春秋社つくって、芥川賞・直木賞も創立した。日本麻雀連盟初総裁をつとめ、競馬に入れ込み馬主にもなり、将棋も嗜み「人生は一局の将棋なり 指し直す能わず」と嘯いている。
頭の回転早くお茶目でいたずら好きで屈託なくむとんちゃく、大人になっても泥まみれで遊んでいる子供のような彼は、ねらいたがわず合戦とか武将も大好きで、ウンチクたれてるだけでは飽き足らず本作を上梓した。
本作は戦国時代の幕開けとなった合戦。「特に勇壮な場面や、華々しい情景には乏しい。活躍する人物にも英雄豪傑はいない」と冒頭にあるようにこの合戦に着目した著書は少ない。その合戦を日本の代表する合戦に入れた菊池寛の史観を端的に表した作品でもある。
