 江戸時代に各地を治めていた藩主は、明治4年の廃藩置県によって国元から切り離されて強制的に東京住まいとなりました。戊辰戦争で勝った大名も負けた大名も一緒くたに、領地は没収され、家臣は解散させられたのです。
大大名家は、維新後も華族として華やかに暮らしたイメージがあります。しかし、新政府に対抗した請西藩の林忠崇は一時は自ら農業をしなくてはならないほど困窮してしまいました。また、朝敵とされた会津藩の松平容保は、日光東照宮などの宮司となり、徳川宗家の菩提をとむらいひっそりと生きたのです。
