朝の月涙のごとくましろけれ
御寺(みてら)の鐘の水渡る時

匂宮は長谷寺参詣の帰りに、宇治の別荘に泊る。八の宮の姫君に関心を寄せ、歌を贈るようになる。
余命わずかと悟る八の宮は、自分の亡きあと姫君たちの行く末を薫に託す。
その秋、八の宮は二人の姫君にいろいろと将来のことを言い聞かせたのち、山の寺に籠り、そのままこの世を去る。
薫は深く悲しみ、宇治にねんごろな心遣いをする。匂宮も弔意の手紙をたびたび出すが姫君たちは取り合わない。忌中が過ぎて宇治を訪ねた薫は悲しみにくれる姫君たちの様子をあわれみ、老女房弁と亡き八の宮をしのぶ。
年の暮に薫は宇治に行き、大君と対面する。薫は匂宮のことを弁護して語りながら、大君への恋情を伝えるが、大君は気づかぬふうをよそおう。
一方、匂宮の歌には中の君（なかのきみ）が返事をしたためていた。
