しろがねの鳥花たてまつる

光源氏は春の宴を催し、池に唐風の船を浮かべ、女房たちを乗せて船楽をしたりして、華やかに過ごしていた。
美しい玉鬘には求婚者が絶えない。源氏の異母弟蛍兵部卿宮（ほたるひょうぶきょうのみや）、内大臣の息子柏木（かしわぎ）、右大将髭黒（ひげくろ）などがいる。
玉鬘は、実父である内大臣に娘であることを名乗り出たいと思うが、源氏の庇護のもとではそれができず、思い悩んでいた。
源氏は求婚者たちの人物をそれぞれ評しながら、玉鬘に恋文の扱い方を教示したりするが、美しい玉鬘を目の前にして、わきあがってくる恋愛感情を抑えることが難しくなっていた。
ついに源氏は玉鬘に自分の恋心を打ち明けるが、玉鬘は思いもよらぬことと困惑し、自分の境遇を深く思い悩むのであった。
