早蕨のうたを法師す君に似ず
よき言葉をば知らぬめでたさ

ひとり残された中の君に山の阿闍梨（あじゃり）から蕨や土筆が届けられた。悲しみにやつれた中の君の面影は亡き大君のようであった。
匂宮が中の君を京へ迎え入れることになった。宇治を離れがたく思う中の君に、薫はこまやかな配慮をする。大君によく似ている中の君を匂宮に託したことを、今となっては後悔する薫であった。
中の君は、喜び浮かれる女房たちをよそに、宇治に残る弁との別れを惜しんで京へ発つ。匂宮は二条の院を豪華にしつらえ、中の君を重々しく迎えた。周囲はその寵愛ぶりに驚き、中の君を立派な姫君と認めるのであった。
花の盛りのころ、薫は二条の院を訪れ、中の君と対面した。それを見た匂宮は中の君と薫の関係にただならぬものを感じ、嫉妬するのであった。
