 本作作者菊池寛は、小説家で、劇作家で、ジャーナリスト、東京市会議だったり、大映の社長だったり。文藝春秋社つくって、芥川賞・直木賞も創立した。日本麻雀連盟初総裁をつとめ、競馬に入れ込み馬主にもなり、将棋も嗜み「人生は一局の将棋なり 指し直す能わず」と嘯いている。
頭の回転早くお茶目でいたずら好きで屈託なくむとんちゃく、大人になっても泥まみれで遊んでいる子供のような彼は、ねらいたがわず合戦とか武将も大好きで、ウンチクたれてるだけでは飽き足らず本作を上梓した。
