黒澤明の遺稿をもとに2000年に映画化されたことでも有名な作品。
大雨のために宿場町で足止めされた浪人三沢伊兵衛。ある日、喧嘩の仲裁で見せた刀の技術が、藩の老職の目に留まり――。

1903年、山梨県生まれ。横浜市の西前小学校卒業後、東京木挽町の山本周五郎商店に徒弟として住み込む。1926年『須磨寺附近』が「文藝春秋」に掲載され、文壇デビュー作となった。『日本婦道記』が1943年上期の直木賞に推されたが、受賞を辞退。1967年2月14日没。享年63歳。
