 茶道具商・茶屋金兵衛、通称茶金はひとたび首をかしげただけで茶器の値が十両になるといわれる京都一の目ききで、ある日清水寺の茶屋の茶碗のひとつをながめ回しながら、「はてな？」とつぶやいた。これを見た油屋が、この茶碗を三両で買って茶金のところへ持っていく。茶金は、ただの茶碗であるが、お湯が漏れるので首をかしげただけと答える。落胆した油屋に金を貸してあげた茶金は、近衛殿下の茶会の際にこの話をすると、殿下がぜひ見たいということになり、この茶碗を見て歌を詠んだので、「はてなの茶碗｣として評判になってしまった。これがまた帝に届き、帝も歌を詠み箱のふたに「はてな」とご染筆。とうとう鴻池善右衛門が千両で買い上げ、油屋は茶金から店を開く資金を渡されたが、五日後大騒ぎで茶金のところへやってくる．．。(C)1980 日本コロムビア株式会社 Performing Arts
