Publisher's Summary

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realises, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 - 'Q' is for 'question mark'. A world that bears a question.

Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame's and Tengo's narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell's, 1Q84 is Haruki Murakami's most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

Critic Reviews

"It is a work of maddening brilliance and gripping originality, deceptively casual in style...vibrating with wit, intellect and ambition." ( The Times)
"Eerie, suspenseful and packed full of gorgeous ordinary details and provocative extraordinary events...funny, fresh and intensely surreal. Unmissable." ( Marie Claire)

boundless brilliance

murakami-san has weaved a brilliant tapestry with words. reading or listening to this book is like letting oneself loose in an exotic garden crowded with the best assorted flowers (read characters) from across the world. the prose flows like water and is as rhythmical as the choicest symphony.

thx to the translators and the voice actors for their brilliant work

Plot of little people ended too abruptly

It’s quite a skill to hold the audience for 900+ pages. It’s a must read / listen for Murakami fans. I loved the ending but plot of little people ended too abruptly. Overall loved the story line, characters and this audible version too!

A very interesting read

Sometimes long winding..but the deft craftsmanship of Murakami manages to keep you glued till the end.

A nice entertaining story

Now after completing the book I can feel a void. got habitual of it. It was so long yet capturing. Part 3 was repetitive but overall a good story

Not the best of Murakami's works

1Q84 is unnecessarily lengthy and has a lot of unnecessary detailing. I liked the story and wanted more of it if I am giving 13-14 days to read/listen to it. The last few chapters feel rushed and the ending as always is open...I wish we can have the next book in the series which adds to the story.

An average drawn out story made popular due to the Author's fame

There are long drawn, descriptive paragraphs of things like clothes and houses.

The ending is a straight up cop out which is like GoT Season 8 in terms of 'subverting expectations'

Just Waosome!!

Such an amazing story and great narration. Only downside would be that there are many parts totally irrelevant to the story. They are just to stretch the story nothing else and wished it had answered many questions but I like this style of not reveaing everything. Apart from that everything is great.
