Story
The latest groundbreaking tome from Tim Ferriss, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The 4-Hour Workweek. For the last two years, I've interviewed more than 200 world-class performers for my podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. The guests range from super celebs (Jamie Foxx, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.) and athletes (icons of powerlifting, gymnastics, surfing, etc.) to legendary Special Operations commanders and black-market biochemists. For most of my guests, it’s the first time they’ve agreed to a two-to-three-hour interview.

Story
What will it take to run a marathon in less than two hours? The world's fastest times for the marathon have been dropping since the distance of 26.2 miles was made official nearly one hundred years ago. But after a noticeable decline that occurred for a half century, the times, while still edging lower, have stalled several minutes north of two hours for the past decade. For the first time, 1:59 examines what it will take for an elite distance runner to go subtwo hours.

Story
The 1989 Ironman World Championship was the greatest race ever in endurance sports. In a spectacular duel that became known as the Iron War, the world's two strongest athletes raced side by side at world-record pace for a grueling 139 miles. Driven by one of the fiercest rivalries in triathlon, Dave Scott and Mark Allen raced shoulder to shoulder through Ironman’s 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike race, and 26.2-mile marathon. After 8 punishing hours, both men would demolish the previous record - and cross the finish line a mere 58 seconds apart.

Publisher's Summary
A breakthrough program for triathletes - beginner, intermediate, and advanced - showing how to balance training intensity to maximize performance - from a fitness expert and elite coach.
Cutting-edge research has proven that triathletes and other endurance athletes experience their greatest performance when they do 80 percent of their training at low intensity and the remaining 20 percent at moderate to high intensity. But the vast majority of recreational triathletes are caught in the so-called "moderate-intensity rut", spending almost half of their time training too hard - harder than the pros. Training harder isn't smarter; it actually results in low-grade chronic fatigue that prevents recreational athletes from getting the best results.
In 80/20 Triathlon, Matt Fitzgerald and David Warden lay out the real-world and scientific evidence, offering concrete tips and strategies, along with complete training plans for every distance - sprint, Olympic, half-Ironman, and Ironman - to help athletes implement the 80/20 rule of intensity balance. Benefits include reduced fatigue and injury risk, improved fitness, increased motivation, and better race results.

Engaging, scientific based and accessible.
You may have noticed that my last name is the same as one of the authors. If you did you may suspect first, that we are related and second, that I am here to shamelessly promote my husband‘s book. You would be right on both counts! Although, in truth, it needs no promoting by me. 80/20 Triathlon speaks for itself. Successful athletes of all ability levels the world over have seen their success rocket upward as they apply the principles laid out in this book. I have witnessed first hand not only David's personal triathlon success, but also the amazing athletes he has coached. David and Matt do an excellent job of breaking down the 80/20 principle for athletes of all experience levels. The science is sound, the material accessible and the narrative engaging. These two love what they do and want to help you find success and enjoyment achieving your best results. If you are looking for a book to help you on your triathlon journey, or take your training to the next level, this book is for you. It is based on 20 plus years of research, personal application and passion. What began as a weekend hobby (for David at least) grew into a quest for scientific accuracy and performance excellence. It has been amazing to see the heights to which each athlete excels when they follow the 80/20 plan. Thanks for another amazing offering David and Matt!

Doesn’t work as audiobook, even with pdf and online materials
There’s nothing I hate more than wasting my time sitting down reading a physical book, but I just dont think this works as an audiobook. Most training books don’t but I thought I’d give it a shot.

Great information for triathletes
This was a very informative and an interesting read. That being said, it was a little advanced for me. While I am preparing for a sprint as a means of weight loss, this is for the seasoned triathlete. While I am no where near the type of althalete that this book would beat bwnefit, I still found it interesting and helpful to what I am doing. While I wanted something that is more analogous to “triathlons for dummies,” I still found this informative, helpful and an excellent guide for training as I progress toward my goals. #newme #triordie #timetotrain #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Great book to help keep you from over-training
I am preparing for my first half ironman distance triathlon and am trying to follow the principles outlined in this book. It is early, but I can already see the benefits of "holding back" in my training. The concepts make sense and I look forward to applying the 80/20 rule in all of my training going forward. The book is excellent and lays out all of the science behind the approach as well, which is great.

Great book, really opened my eyes!
I am sure this book was written for me personally because it describes me to a "T"! I push every ride and run to the max and blame getting injured or sick on just getting older. I can't wait to implement the strategies learned.

Intriguing
I have definitely felt the "moderate intensity rut" and am guilty of biking with a group that competes on every hill, running with some friends that believe if it's not painful then you're not training. Hopefully I can learn how to apply the 80/20 principles and still enjoy the company of those I like to train with. That is going to be the challenge. Hopefully this book will convince them to make the change too and we will all be the better and faster for it.

Provides building blocks for triathlete training.
The background information and scientific explanations seem clear and sound. To make practical use of the ideas, you must reference a lot of material (tables, training plans, etc) in a pdf that is automatically downloaded with the book. I believe that if you go through this information while listening to the book, you can either build your own training plan for any length of race/experience level/goal or customize plans that are provided. I think the authors tried to make things as easy as possible for triathletes to determine various thresholds and zones used in training. Unfortunately, you can't follow the references made extensively by the book unless you have printed out a copy of the pdf or have a large screen where the pdf can be viewed. Clearly, putting together a triathlon training plan can be complicated, but if you have the ability to understand some mathematical data, and some patience to make a detailed plan,, this book provides a road map and the pdf provides all the building blocks you should need. However, you will also need some technical equipment such as a heart rate monitor, garmin (or equivalent) with multisport capabilities, power meter, etc. If you don't have a range of measurement devices or are not willing to make a detailed plan, the main lessons you can learn from the book is that approximately 80% of time spent on each discipline (80% of distance in case of swimming) should not be hard. Most non-professional triathletes unconsciously spend too much time on workouts that are hard enough to hinder recovery and harm performance in subsequent hard workouts. In the end their race performances will stagnate and they will fail to meet their potential.

A must-listen (read) for all triathletes
I used to train based on different principles, such as always going hard to develop the top-end of my strength and speed and always trying to avoid the slow and boring workouts. This book gives you a different perspective on training, with lots of counterintuitive ideas that are backed up by the science. After listening the audiobook, I’ve decided to try the full IM plan from them for a race happening next November.

Content really interesting but just doesn't really work as an audiobook. Even with accompanying pdf would still get most out of the writing if able to flick from one chapter to another. Advise the print version.

Does what it says on the tin
Think it could be told better as a newbie planning to get into triathlon. Haven't yet explored if the PDF or parts of are printable would be nice but I doubt it. The PDF is under chapter heading as some in previous reviews couldn't find it. Will be listening to it at least once more thoroughly before going over parts again at times.

Helpful, gives good depth to understand principles
I enjoyed the book, Gives a good review of the evidence of what the principle is about, and how it has come about. And the pdf is downloadable from the Audible desktop website. Helpfully it has the training plans which if you bought from their website would cost you up to $85. Bargain!

An interesting topic but not an audiobook for me
I'm not sure what logic was used to make this into an audiobook. A hard copy is essential and not even the give away PDF makes up for this. A perfect cure for insomnia as you listen to chapter upon chapter of numbers and a rather dreary voice. It is unfortunate since the topic is really worth considering and the science pretty compelling.

Another Fitzgerald (Warden) cracker
Matt Fitzgerald and David Warden team up brilliantly here. If you have read Matt Fitzgerald previously, you will not be disappointed with this. Being based in Western Australia and prior to reading 8020 Triathlon I did not know who David Warden was but once I did my research I began to understand his exceptional work with athletes such as the Iron Cowboy and his own personal achievements, fair to say a true powerhouse in his sport. What a team we have here.
You feel that the two professionals treat the reader, whatever level they are at, with respect. They explicitly highlight the details you need to be aware of in order for you to maximise and help achieve your own performance goals. For me Fitzgerald always breaks down the science and explains things in an easy to understand format. Yes, there may be some light decoding but you get it, easily. As a reader you experience page after page of educational treats and if you understand the 8020-way or even if you do not Fitzgerald and Warden give you all the tools required to make and understand your own 8020 Triathlon plan! WITH NO EXTRA CHARGE!!
You know and feel the plethora of hints, tips and advice come from many years of endurance experience between the two and you can be rest assured that whether you are at beginner, intermediate or sub elite level you will learn many things as you journey through this book. I am certain that this book will remain on my bookshelf (with no dust!!) for many different reference reasons for a very long time!
