Publisher's Summary

Who hanged the headmaster in the playground on the night of the school Hallowe'en party? Almost everyone in Heppleburn either hated or feared the viper-tongued Harold Medburn.

Inspector Ramsay is convinced it was the headmaster's enigmatic wife, but Jack Robson, school governor and caretaker, is determined to prove her innocence. With the help of his restless, enthusiastic daughter, Patty, Jack digs into the secrets of Heppleburn and uncovers a cesspit - of lies, adultery, blackmail and madness.

I didn't think I would like this book, but it surprised me.

I enjoyed this book, it took me a long time to get into it and it was hard to keep track of all the characters but it was worth persisting. It's a good story with a number of twists and turns in the plot and interesting characters. I don't think it's as good as her other books, but I would recommend it.

Not the best Ann Cleeves

Disappointing is the word to describe this book. Very one dimensional characters leaves you not caring about any of the group of characters.

A Lesson Excellent Story Telling

This story pulls you in at every turn, seeming deceptively simple the plot is complex and intriguing throughout. And the narration captures the mood in a way that keeps you rooting for every character. That and an unexpected end makes this one of the really brilliant “who done it” novels.

Very dull and disappointing

I'm a big fan of Ann Cleaves but this is awfully dull, not helped by the downbeat narration, my advice is give it a miss.

Love the Vera books but I can't get into this Inspector Ramsey book at all. I'm afraid its being returned.

Really enjoyable.

Very good in all aspects. Sound, content and acting. Only problem it kept me listening when I should have been sleeping.

Quick Listen

Well read especially the female voices as often when read by a male can be distracting. Enjoyed the story but shorter tgan I'm used to. Story ok but weaker than Vera stories.

Great everything

I loved everything about this book. The narrator was really good also. I haven't come across an Ann Cleeves book that I haven't liked.

I am a huge fan of Ann Cleeves but ...

I found this book pretty average for an Ann Cleeves. It just seems never to get out of first gear, the characters are a rather charmless lot and nothing exciting happens. There is little of the sense of place this author is usually so good at. I had to push myself to finish it.
