Story
The 19th century was an exciting time of initiative and enterprise around the world. If John D. Rockefeller was creating unimagined wealth in the United States that he would put to the service of the nation, a Parsi family with humble roots was doing the same in India. The Tatas is a tribute to a line of visionaries who have a special place in the hearts and minds of ordinary Indians. Written by seasoned journalist Girish Kuber, this is also the only book that tells the complete Tata story spanning almost 200 years.

When Titan Company Limited launched its quartz watches some 30 years ago, the founders - a merry bunch of Tata employees who started out simply wanting 'to do something different' - could not have foreseen just how completely they would capture the imagination of Indian consumers in the post-liberalization era of the 1990s. This audiobook takes listeners from boardrooms to back rooms to reveal how a quintessential Indian brand from the house of the Tatas, not known till then for its success in the consumer goods market, reached such remarkable heights.

Story
Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

It is a time of violence as well as calm. Men of peace are spreading the message of the Buddha even as monks are being tortured in the dungeons of Pataliputra. In Magadha, all talk is about the impending war against Kalinga. While King Ashoka plots the movements of his ships and cavalry, Queen Asandhimitra broods over the growing unrest in the kingdom. There is only one man they can both trust to take them through this period of uncertainty and looming danger: the enigmatically named Brahmin, skilful spymaster and custodian of Magadha’s best-kept secrets.

Overall brilliantly performed ***** ALL FIVE STARS
The book offers glimpses of legendry Indian industrialist J.R.D. Tata’s life. The most memorable lines for me are brilliantly performed by Boman Irani:
“I believe that the social responsibilities of an industrial enterprise should extend even beyond serving people to the environment. This need is now fairly well recognized but there is still considerable scope for most industrial ventures to extend their support not only to human beings but also to the land to the forests to the waters to the creatures that inhabit them”.
Similarly, Shernaz Patel’s performance is extraordinary. The narrators make this book a memorable one. The book also reminded me of Langston Hughes’s poem,
“Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly ….”
J.R.D Tata’s life cannot be captured in a one-hour audiobook. He dreamed big and worked hard to make them real, He is the founder of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Air India, and more than 80 companies.
J.R. Tata said and I quote “I do not want India to be an economic superpower. I want India to be a happy country.” And this was the measure of his value system.
Great book and everybody will learn something new.
