Publisher's Summary
Prepare for the jaw-dropping finale of Sabaa Tahir's beloved New York Times best-selling An Ember in the Ashes fantasy series, and discover who will survive the storm.
Picking up just a few months after A Reaper at the Gates left off.
The long-imprisoned jinn are on the attack, wreaking bloody havoc in villages and cities alike. But for the Nightbringer, vengeance on his human foes is just the beginning.
At his side, Commandant Keris Veturia declares herself empress and calls for the heads of any and all who defy her rule. At the top of the list? The Blood Shrike and her remaining family.
Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her. Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer. In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory or to an unimaginable doom.
And deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life and love he left behind. Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn. To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must look beyond the borders of his own land. He must take on a mission that could save or destroy all that he knows.
Critic Reviews

An underwhelming finish - worse narration
Not overly thrilled by how this series finished. The plot dragged on and the only character I had even the slightest interest in towards the end was Helene. The rest, including Laia and Elias - of which I have shipped SO HARD from the very beginning, had little development and did little to make me root for them. BUT that being said... I do feel that listening to the audiobook instead of reading the physical book most definitely did not help because the narration is absolutely AWFUL!
The narrators for this book are all new, which in itself isn't a problem. However, it is so painfully obvious that they haven't even bothered to listen to the other books to see how names and places are pronounced? Surely this is audiobook narration 101? I listened to all the four books back-to-back and the first three are fantastic, which it was even more disappointing having to sit through 16 hours of listening to even the MAIN CHARACTERS' names being mispronounced. It was painful. There were also other glaring things like 'skims' instead of 'sims' (5.37) and 'harbour' instead of Harper (4.49). Don't even get me started on how Helene suddenly turned into Helen and how the word 'says' was pronounced throughout the whole 16 hours by Laia's narrator.
My biggest regret is that I chose to listen to the audiobook rather than pick up the book itself. Do yourself a favour and buy the book in the store.

Lackluster ending
I was so looking forward to this book as I really enjoyed the first 3 and wanted to see how the story would end but unfortunately, I don't think it lived up to the other books in the series.
One of the main things which put me off was the change in narrator for Alia's character. He just didn't give me the same feelings. I'm not sure what the reasons were for changing narrators, but when you're so far into a series and Alia being one of the main characters, the listener has bonded with that voice, so a change just throws it out.
Also, I thought the book dragged on a bit and can't honestly remember much of what happens, there was a lot of the characters travelling.
Spoiler ahead!!!
I also feel that she didn't have to kill off Harper, I really liked him, he helped ground Helen so it would have been great if he didn't die. I also thought Olivia's death was just for the sake of shock and killing a character the reader/listener liked.
It was a shame because this was one of my favourite series before this last book.

my favourite YA series flushed down the toilet...
bye wtf i want to forget i ever read this😭 crying... and not tears of joy or content. This was so depressingly disappointing... its a subjective opinion of course but i have never felt such painful unsatisfaction and it stems from the fact that I wholeheartedly loved the quality of the ember in the Ashes books and its characters but alas, like all things too great, it must come to an end and this one wasn't at all what I hoped. GUTTED. for Laia and Elias shippers this book is your wet dream and you'll end it happier than me but lovers of Helene and those who prefer her POVs, like myself, this book is essentially a worst nightmare. get ready for PAIN and INJUSTICE. I am, again: gutted. how could it all fall apart like that? things were really added to the plot for convenience and to get emotional reaction out of the reader rather than logic and intricate care to the story.
The writing was much weaker here too compared to its predecessors. Felt very very YA and not the high quality the other books carried. Predicable and lacked creativity.
and the ongoing melodramatic romance between laia and elias that consistently led to nothing substance in aiding incoming battles *shoves finger down throat* . I was so in love with laia and Elias at the beginning but wow as the series progessed their characters lost their original spark. elias especially. laia had many redeeming scenes in previous books but the soul catcher sub plot completely ruined Elias as a once great character I would die for and turned him into a one dimensional and irritating deux machina or whatever its called. Helene is quite literally the best character in this series, her POVs were the hanging thread keeping these books no lower than a 4 stars for me. A queen who's resilience I shall never get out of my mind. Avitas Harper is my 2nd fave character in this series. gosh I love that guy dearly.
too bad Sabaa, TOO BAD.
in terms of the audio narrators performance, I'd give it a 3/5. the voice for the nightbringer should have been someone with a deeper tone, similar to Liam Neeson to give it that ominiscene and mystery.

Not sure
I'd really been looking forward to this and had listened to the last three in preparation. It really threw me that the voice actor for Elias had changed and I think because of that I couldn't really get into this one. I kept forgetting who was talking and it didn't sound right.
Vague spoilers- I also felt like some people were killed really easily and others weren't. I didn't like the relevation about one of the main characters or that they suddenly got more powerful, but kept forgetting conveniently to use them for plot purposes. I didn't think it was as good or as engaging as the other books.

Excellent Ending
I'm always concerned when I get to the last book in a series, that it won't be properly rounded off. Without going into spoilers, I was very pleased with the conclusion of each characters story and not having it be as simple as, good triumphs over evil.
The Performance this book was very good. Overall I have given this book 5 stars but performance wise, only 4. This is simply because of the replacement of Jack Farrar as Elias. Don't get me wrong, I think Joe Gaminara does a great job. However, it did take a bit get used to the new voice for a key character. This does not take away from the book as a whole and I would definitely recommend it.

beautiful
I cried for the last 6 chapters as I felt such sorrow for Helene and Darren. I honestly love helene and think she is the what character but her ending and position was fitting for her. I like the careers for Elias and Laia. the story was fantastic with many POVs so I could understand and empathise with antagonists and protagonists .
the only bad bit is that I feel some magical concepts were just not explained enough or brushed over.

Inconsistent pronunciation
What a fantastic way to end this series! Sabaa Tahir is a great storyteller and I can’t wait for what she does next. She has such a way of writing unforgettable characters and intricate worlds.
In saying this, I recommend reading the book as opposed to the audio as their were quite a lot of mispronunciations of characters names and words, which were extremely off-putting.
