About this listen

Best known for its opening line - "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" - Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities portrays a world on fire, split between Paris and London during the brutal events of the French Revolution. Dickens, in his anti-political tone, lambastes both aristocratic tyranny and revolutionary excess. In A Tale of Two Cities he presents a moving account of sacrifice and redemption.

Set in the timeframe of the French revolution, the book talks throught the struggles of the Manette family and various twists and turns over the years. It was fun to read a book written in a different era. The style, vocabulary, structure and as a result the intonation (since I listened to the audiobook) were a refreshing change from today's books. I must say that the initial build up of characters and context takes longer than usual and it is easy to get distracted or lose interest. The book picks up in the second half as matters turn interesting as various events take shape. Overall, if the reader can sit through the initial context setting and doesn't get distracted by the detailed character building, the reader will enjoy this book.
