Publisher's Summary

Sixteen years have passed since Grace was locked up, at the age of 16, for the cold-blooded murders of her employer and his housekeeper/lover. Her alleged accomplice in the crimes, James McDermot, paid the extreme sentence of the law and was hanged on November 21, 1843. But some thought Grace was innocent, and her sentence has been commuted to life imprisonment. After a spell in the Lunatic Asylum she now claims to have no memory of the murders, and so Dr Simon Jordan tries to wake the part of Grace's mind which lies dormant. But what will he find?

A book that relies on reader to fill in blanks

"The shirts and the nightgowns flapping in the breeze on a sunny day were like large white birds, or angels rejoicing, although without any heads. But when we hung the same things up inside, in the gray twilight of the drying room, they looked different, like pale ghosts of themselves hovering and shimmering there in the gloom."

Alias Grace is a very intelligent book that satisfactorily leaves you to fill in the blanks. More than the truth, this is one of the books, where you the reader, are identifying the tells of inconsistency.

16 year old, Grace Marks is convicted of abetting in the double murder of her employer Thomas Kinnear and his paramour Nancy Montgomery. Except she presents different versions of her story - once during the arrest, once during the trial and once to her doctors. Is she crazy? Or Is he a cunning manipulator? Or is she telling the truth of her innocence?

Enter young Dr.Simon who, armed with his degrees, wants to ascertain the truth and help Grace with a mercy petition. Over multiple sessions, we learn Grace's childhood, her journey and then the household. All the while Grace keeps throwing in hints as to the unreliability of her story. Picks up pace closer to the actual murder.

Dr.Simon himself seems to be having an eerie parallel story. The twists and turns slipped in make for a joyride. The book leaves you with questions, theories and a closure which is balanced.

Happy that I chose a less dramatic Audible edition narrated by Shelly Thompson. Sometimes you don't want a BGM so that the silences can fill in for the atmosphere.
