Publisher's Summary

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man.

When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey. Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs, and hell takes on a new meaning. Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors....

....Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.

Fast paced start to finish

A well produced drama. Sci-fi horror is the strength of the alien franchise and this does justice to exactly that. Conventional characters doing conventional stuff but some how keep it fresh using different locales and very very good voice acting.

Definitely worth a try.

A new beginning!

As a long time admirer of the Aliens franchise (and by that I don't only mean the film franchise) a possibility of breaking out of their 'three super being diagram' that comprises of the Engineers, The Aliens and Humans was exciting. I don't remember them ever mentioning any dog shaped, genderless, ancient, sentient,p highly developed beings in any of the films or the graphic novels. A treat for the star gazers. Hauer was stunning as always.

Nostalgic

The character performances were great, but there was no fear installing audio experience. The story is interesting, well thought out and stands on its own with a little support from the first movie. Ties up well in the end.

A deeply colonial perspective

The author takes on a very colonist perspective of life. To be scared of something that is hunting you, is more than fair and killing them as a consequence is mere self defence. But the author justifies blasting their planet merely because the humans saw them as 'monsters' and 'parasites' when the humans were literally mining the monsters' planet. If they are deadly kill a few and run back to ship to back home. Don't just destroy a whole planet because you don't like the creaters!

The book felt like colonist British history mixed with Avatar, where the creaters have been vilianised for normal existence. The writing prompt could be 'an intelligent species came to eart in the Jurassic era and felt attacked by the dinosaurs'. (Not necessarily a bad thing)

The voice actors have done a stellar job though, and the audiobook has been produced really well. You can listen to the chapters after a long while as well and won't feel like you're missing the connecting dots. A little repetitive here and there but works in your favour if there are long gaps between when you hear the chapters.

I enjoyed it quite a lot even though the story just rubbed me the wrong way. The characters also kept making jokes- which felt a bit out of place often. Example when 1 of their friends die in the hands of the aliens. The voice actors could have brought a bit more empathy to the charecters I feel.

Absolute treat for Alien fans

Follows well in the mighty footsteps of Ridley Scott's Alien saga. This particular book/series is set right after the first film, so you needn't have watched the others from the original trilogy or from the subsequent Prometheus saga, but if you have you will enjoy the Easter eggs generously sprinkled throughout. As disappointed as I was that Sigourney Weaver didn't actually voice Ripley, the voice actor playing her managed to capture Weaver's tense and breathy nuances almost scarily well and, along with the rest of the cast put forth excellent performances, that guaranteed that I remained thoroughly occupied and immerwed throughout. Of course, having Rutger Hauer voice Ash the Synth was an inspired casting decision and an appropriate tribute to his role in the original Blade runner movie. I watched the Alien movie for the first time when I was about 8 years old, and remember being at once traumatized and fascinated by it. So, for someone who has spent almost his entire lifetime as an admirer of the movie and the series it spawned, this present work was an absolute thrill. My only complaint, if I had to voice one, is that there wasn't enough of it!

Super-charged Alien Creepiness!

Deliciously creepy tension and fast paced action, this was a blast! From the opening scenes through to the end this smashes through the storyline at a remarkable rate. The high quality cast and excellent production values make this an absolute joy to listen to. Eerie and solid sound effects genuinely do add to the unfolding drama, even the cat gets some lines!

Some will find problems with the fact that this deviates from the known Alien story that went before it but I think this does a good enough job to bend things the amount it does and indeed it does just bend things rather than break them. It’s a fine audio drama and while probably nothing could quite match the tension of the films this does a great job of evoking similar feelings of dread and panic. There are some clever story telling techniques including the “software interloper” whose identity I will not reveal as I don’t do spoilers!

In all this is a fine drama, if I have a complaint it’s that it simply wasn’t long enough!! I am sure I could have listened to this kind of action for several more hours! And I am delighted that after my previous experience with Audible Studios which was the awful Starling Project this is the best one that I have heard from them yet. The investment in the production values and the high quality cast has more than paid dividends!

Bravo!

Gripping

I remember watching the film Alien, many years ago, so the thought of a freebie in the same genre appealed to me. This turned out to be one of the best things Ive listened to in ages.
The storyline plays along the similar Alien theme of picking off crew members one by one, but the plot kept me listening and gripped throughout the entire series.
Well worth a listen.

A long time Alien fan's opinion

I was sceptical of this at first, but let me tell you that this was one of the best stories I've read/heard in recent memory that's set in the Alien universe.

After trying to wash the sour taste of Covenant from my mouth (yes even after years), this was probably the best thing that I could have found.

Lots of tension, the characters are multidimensional, the setting is intriguing and the story is surprising well written.

If you're an Alien fan, then there is no reason to not have a listen!

An audio movie

This could only be described as an audio film. Rather the usual audio book with a nice voice reading it, this has actors playing all characters with cool sound effects. Im visually impaired and this book was better than most films.

F@$KING AWESOME!

This is so good! Why can't all books be like this? No 'he said /she said/she felt' etc. Just a bunch of great voice acting with sound effects.

This style of audio book was perfect for my long drive over the holidays. It turned a 4 hr drive into a thrilling and fast experience!

Great acting, superb sound effects and really cool story. 10/10 would recommend!

Now I'll be disappointed with every other book I read.

Aliens 0.5

A great "prequel" story to James Cameron's Aliens, that is performed by talented actors and wrapped in a delicious package of sound fx. All we need now is a deck of cards.

This Audio drama is worth every credit. If you're a fan of the Alien franchise, you will enjoy this piece.

Comfortably fitting in between Alien and Aliens, you'll be engaged throughout the whole tale. The voice actor for Ellen Ripley is spot on too!

Treat yourself.

First time listening to an audio dramatisation and I’m blown away

I love it from the get go, the production values of it are over the top and is the best type of movies, the one you create or fill the visual gaps yourself, the story itself feels a bit of a gimmick but overall is quite a fun ride, totally recommended for alien fans that wants some ties from the architects ark to connect with Ripley ark

Entertaining and Chilling!

I have become a fan of Dirk Maggs. The story is action packed right from the start and has a lot of creepy/gory moments. The sound effects certainly play a big role. Another great audio production by Audible. Kudos!
