Publisher's Summary

No one looks kindly on the killer of a king.

After unwittingly helping her mother poison King Louis XIV, 17-year-old alchemist Mirabelle Monvoisin is forced to see her mother's Shadow Society in a horrifying new light: They're not heroes of the people, as they've always claimed to be, but murderers. She herself included. Mira tries to ease her guilt by brewing helpful curatives, but her hunger tonics and headache remedies cannot right past wrongs or save the dissenters whom her mother vows to purge.

Royal bastard Josse de Bourbon is more kitchen boy than fils de France. But when the Shadow Society assassinates the Sun King and half of the royal court, he must become the prince he was never meant to be in order to save his injured sisters and the petulant dauphin. Forced to hide in the sewers beneath the city, Josse's hope of reclaiming Paris seems impossible - until his path collides with Mirabelle's.

She's a deadly poisoner. He's a bastard prince. They are sworn enemies, yet they form a tenuous pact to unite the commoners and former nobility against the Shadow Society. But can a rebellion built on mistrust ever hope to succeed?

Very good

So, I’m very happy with this book. I’ve struggled to find anything decent that is over five hours on included. This was it. This is what I needed to find on Audible Included to really be satisfied with the service.
Even if I had to pay a credit (which I will because I want to hear this over and over again), I would definitely do that. This is a fantasy romance that is very, and I do mean very, light on history. Take it as an alternate dimension or just a fantasy with coincidentally a country called France and a King Louis. The characters are well written, I actually really liked the narrator, the story makes sense and doesn’t have any huge plot holes that make you angry at the characters for doing something stupid. It’s really good.

Narration was too dramatic

The narrator for Mirabelle was overly dramatic and full of breathy gasps. I don’t want a flat narration but I don’t want a radio dramatization either. Way over the top with the acting.

Well done!

I loved this book. I didn’t love the reader. I felt like she was a little whiny when I felt the main character was much tougher than that. It was easy to love the characters and fall in love with the story.

Definitely worth a listen!

It was a lot of fun!! I listened through it very quickly! It wasn't a big mystery, but it was adventurous and creative with rhe what if change in history.. super sweet too, even a little grit.. As some people commented, yes mirabell's voice actress could get little annoying at times, but we have to remember that they are only 18 or so thus their choices and behaviours reflect that. Jesse's actor was awesome though. I definitely recommend this one.

What a pleasant surprise! A must listen .....

Honestly, I normally would not read or listen to this genre, but I was drawn to it, and I gave it a chance. I am so glad that I did!
The writing, storytelling, and character development are exemplary and masterful.
I was completely involved in the story. To avoid a spoiler alert, I will say simply that the quality authorship caused me to care about key characters and experience many things, such as despair, anger, relief, and justice.
Do yourself a huge favor and experience this epic tale full of some clever twists and turns!
The different characters portrayed by only two narrators was a difficult feat that was well done.
I plan to read the hard copy to get a different sense of the story without the voices.
