Publisher's Summary

Maud is an irascible 88-year-old Swedish woman with no family, no friends, and...no qualms about a little murder. This funny, irreverent story collection by Helene Tursten, author of the Irene Huss Investigation series, features two-never-before translated stories that will keep you laughing all the way to the retirement home.

Ever since her darling father's untimely death when she was only 18, Maud has lived in the family's spacious apartment in downtown Gothenburg rent-free, thanks to a minor clause in a hastily negotiated contract. That was how Maud learned that good things can come from tragedy. Now in her late 80s, Maud contents herself with traveling the world and surfing the net from the comfort of her father's ancient armchair. It's a solitary existence, and she likes it that way.

Over the course of her adventures - or misadventures - this little, bold lady will handle a crisis with a local celebrity who has her eyes on Maud's apartment, foil the engagement of her long-ago lover, and dispose of some pesky neighbors. But when the local authorities are called to investigate a dead body found in Maud's apartment, will Maud finally become a suspect?

Entertaining

An absolutely hilarious collection of stories. I started listening to this just by chance and it was a very happy accident. I was utterly shocked at the end of the first story and amazed by the second one but cackling by the third one.

Enjoyed it

I was not expecting this book to have the notorious plot just by looking at the cover. Now I completely agree that we should never judge a book by it's cover.

Cruelty is NOT comedy

I Wanted to like these stories. I like satire and I love the conceit of an elderly woman playing on the stereotypes of the elderly to defy them and defeat others. However, this character is just a sociopath. And the commentary about mental illness is facile and stereotypical.

Narrator was great despite the content of the book

I thought this book would be like Fredrick Backmans book, "A Man Called Ove." Or even The Little Old Lady series from Catharina Ingleman-Sundberg. No such luck.

First chapter in and there is crude language, mention of tampons and dildos. Also the token gay guy is put in to round it all out. I listened to the first chapter and didn't care to hear more. Content was horrible. Did not grab the reader. And it seems the author wants the shock value over real content.

The narrator was excellent. Her voice was clear and easy to listen to. Great dictation. I would love to hear her read other books.

Not your Mama's Miss Marple!

I was surprised by the twist but this is hilarious in an evil way! Loved it!

Disappointed

Not up to the standard I've come to expect from Helene Tursten. I was left with an unsettling feeling of lack of completeness.

Rather dry

Aimless, just a series of short stories where Maud kills people while ruminating on senior issues.
There wasn’t enough dialogue, action, or personality to draw me in.

For better stories about seniors who slay, I recommend:
The Elite Assassins Emotional Support Group (superb novella with at least one retiring assassin)
Killers of a Certain Age (adventure with a team of retiring lady assassins)
The Old Woman with a Knife (add some Asian flair to the killing business)

Great Fun!

This crafty old lady gets revenge in the most entertaining way. She does what many of us have fantasized about.

Fabulous anti hero!

I LOVED this, it was such good fun. Maud is a brilliant anti-hero - I mean, I'm not saying I want to be a serial killer when I'm older, but we can all learn something from her cross-me-and-I-will-actually-kill-you attitude. If you like your humour dark and gruesome and your old ladies fiercely independent and murdery, you'll love this.

Entertaining

Well read. A short audiobook . Very good character in Maud , the innocent looking elderly lady who you would not want as a neighbour. Like a misanthropic Miss Marple using her cleverness for wrong-doing. Very entertaining.

Far too short as a whole but little, unique gems

The measure of how much I was enjoying these stories was the extent of my disappointment when they suddenly stopped. I’d hardly got into the spirit of the character and place.
How refreshing to meet an elderly woman in a story that reflects a reality one does not normally come across. All of it seems credible nonetheless. Underestimated older women rarely are seen to be so active and decisive in literature and multimedia. Maude’s façade is priceless. Hope we get to share more of her adventures.

Of limited interest but very useful

These stories are good to listen to in the middle of the night when you cannot get to sleep. Turn them down low. I listen to them several times a week and never get to the end.
