Perfect for a road trip!

At first I found the narrator’s voice to be quite annoying but then I got used to it. I think I read more than a third of the book in a day because I was sitting in a car (almost) all day long and the storyline really picks up after the first quarter. This book spoke about so many real life issues like mental health, eating disorders, abusive relationships. Each of the characters was so.. layered that they could never be described as simply as black or white, good or evil. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.

A long boring ride that tires you halfway

Could not muster courage to finish the book. The story has lots of unnecessary tangents and details and it moves in the same direction almost forever. Narration was decent though.

When all loose threads are tied together….

Not sure if the book would have been any less if finished off an hour shorter. But the beauty of every last thread being tied off and every aspect described in detail or mentioned in passing would have been missed.

Gripping Read!

It's hard to put this book in one particular genre, it stands in the borderlands between psychological thriller and family drama. Initial chapters were slightly difficult because Moriarty, the author, toggles back and forth between present and past. Once I caught hold of various elements author was trying to weave I was unable to put this book down.
As a mystery, it did a good job of carrying me along.

Not worth your time

The plot held promises but never really went anywhere worth your time. The reading was over dramatic, as if it is an Eistedfodd performance by a teen. The jump from characters and times and situations happens too fast and a lot of things get repeated without reason. Least favourite book of 2021 and worst audiobook by far.

Narration

I struggled to finish this book....and in the end I did give up. The narration is harsh and grating. If I had read the book myself, I would have enjoyed it far more.

Liane Moriarty at her best!!!

This book was amazing! The twists and turns, the small detail with BIG meanings. I just can't put in words how much I enjoyed every part. I know a lot of people stopped listening because of the narrator. But I absolutely love Caroline Lee, the way her performance pics up on the small nuances of the Australian dialect, gives the story extra flare.
I am devastated that the book is finished.
More more more please!

Great story, annoying performance

I am loving the story but the narrator is not for me. I have decided to rather buy the book.

Best Ever - Laughed, Cried - Thrilling + Inspiring

I have enjoyed Liane Moriarty's books before - enough to consider her latest books as must-haves.
In particular I really loved "9 Perfect Strangers" which enthralled me totally and I thought was an amazing evolution to her already winning style.

Incredibly "Apples Never Fall" is another giant quantum leap on and is simply sublime in structure, style, subject, pathos, psychology and family dynamics - I did not just love it - I adored it so much I listened to several chapters over again and when it came to its rich and haunting ending and final reveal I felt tears rolling down my cheeks.

This was partly as the whole unique book had been so moving but also as I had been enjoying it so much as it was such a fabulous journey that I did not want to end.

All this a haunting and captivating mystery at the very heart of it and so many intriguing sub-plots weaving their way through this richly woven story of complex family dynamics.

It was very well researched and as an avid Tennis fan this not only added another layer of interest but it also authentically captured the passion which so many spectators and players feel about the sport and how it can capture a person's whole life. However for those who have not got the Tennis bug, never fear as this was just a tiny part of the overall experience but just done superbly.

I was totally in awe of the fresh innovative structure of the book and adored the way the chapters were often like stories themselves, told often from the viewpoint of a character who we had not met yet, but who knew the family who we had grown to know so well.

It really was captivating and so tightly plotted with twists and turns and reveals that never failed to shock, delight and amaze. Many of the enchanting little details and character's memories which added so much atmosphere and flavour to the story turned out to be cunning little crumbs which were all gathered together, mixed up and rearranged into an amazing Bombe Surprise Gateaux.

Liane Mortiarty's spectacular writing skills and flawlessly woven plots and sub-plots really was like a magic trick marrying all the different character's experiences and perspectives together to reveal truths beneath truths and expose the complex motivations which form relationships, personalities and seemingly inexplicable actions.
It really was fascinating and so very very clever and so emotionally intelligent - funny, sad, bittersweet with so much insight into generational differences and relationships - but overall just so richly entertaining and unselfconsciously written it was GENIUS!

The narration was perfection also and really brought out all the characters and scenes so evocatively - hilarious at times, tender at others. I will really miss this voice in my head bringing this truly memorable and multi layered story to life every night.

I don't know what this book has inspired me more to do - start playing Tennis again or finally start plotting my first mystery thriller!

A million stars for this one in a million book.

Thank you so much Liane Moriarty - this was just such a delicious, unique and super special sublime treat.

Great Fun

I downloaded this book to listen to on a coastal walking holiday.
It was a good choice. Many serious issues tackled but on the whole it often made me smile and laugh out loud.
It is a fun read and l recommend it.
The narrator contributed to the sense of fun.
(I totally forgive her for the Irish accent - Probably tricky for an Australian).
5 stars for entertainment all round.

Fantastic. I think her best.

I didn’t enjoy nine perfect strangers, it was disjointed and somehow incomplete. But this latest book is truly fabulous writing. Moriartys observations of people’s everyday thoughts and interactions is perfect. And so real, it’s what makes her writing special.
I loved the plot twist in this book kept me hooked throughout.

Love it or hate it

This book may well divide people. I found it excessively long, peopled with repetative characters (apples fromt the same tree are usually the same) who constantly shouted at each other, narrated with a hoarse shouty Australian voice. Glad it's ended.

Fab

Enjoyed this so much! The characterisation and relationships were stunning, believable
relatable and hugely complemented by quality narration. The light and dark in the story made for a smashing listen. Contemporary (listened 2021) to me born in 1971 and my new favourite work of Liane Moriarty.

As brilliant as ever, both the story and narration

As always with Liane Moriarty's books you are taken on an extraordinary journey. Nothing is straightforward, nothing is obvious or what it seems at first glance. The lines of the characters ordinary lives are intertwined in an unexpected way we all got used to in Liane's books. You can never ever guess the next turn in the journey.
The Apples Never Fall is nothing less than what we got used to from the author. Absolutely brilliant storytelling with the greatest, wittiest detailing.
The narration from Caroline Lee is flawless and nothing short of excellent.
Honestly, Liane's books are kind of a soulfood- should be available from your GP! Luckily it is available in the shops!
Cannot wait for the next book! Xx

hooked - brilliant narrator

I really enjoyed this book- I think the story really benefits from being presented as an audiobook; the narrator adds a certain element which makes dialogue and thoughts of characters come alive and makes particular parts hilarious- and while some parts may feel slow, it does keep you on the edge of your seat and it all comes together in the end.

Peerless Storytelling

This was a sweet treat from intriguing start to spine-tingly finish. Liiane Moriarty is the Anthony Trollope de nos jours and should be feted as such. An assured hand throughout and did Chekhov proud with the apples in the opening scene echoed in the crumble of one of the last. Caroline Lee’s narration gilded the lily; sublimely nuanced, moving and heartfelt. Thank you so much for this title. Marguerite Jasmin Tomlinson

Slow, boring waste of time

I kept going with the book thinking something interesting would happen. I was wrong. Did not like anything about this book. It had good reviews so thought I must finish it, it’s going to get better, I was wrong. Loved ‘big little lies’ but this was drawn out and dreary.
