ONE OF THE GUARDIAN'S 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE 21st CENTURY
Adapted into a major film starring Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan.
'A person is, among all else, a material thing, easily torn and not easily mended'
On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house.
Watching her too is Robbie Turner who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have been changed for ever, as Briony commits a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone.

The Many Versions of Truth
Thoroughly enjoyed it! The story kept me hooked from start to finish and it spurred me to wonder about how we often manipulate the truth to suit our narratives... In life and in fiction!

Mistake, Fallout and Atonement
Good story as how a mistake by a young child destroys the life of a young man and along with him of his lover and her family. It was easy to correlate to the characters as they seemed so real. The book did meander a little bit but for most part it was quite interesting. Briony's character was the most realistic while both Robbie and Cecilia were inspirational characters who were wronged because of the impressionable mind of a child.

Uncanny Empathy
Ian McEwan displays the most astonishing capacity to get into the heads of the diverse characters he creates. From the fevered imaginings and smug confidence of a self-righteous 13 year old… to the plaintive yearnings of lovers separated by misunderstandings and betrayals. The author is similarly able bring alive the idyllic colors of English country life and the unspeakable horrors of war trenches, with equal ease.
Hats off to a literary masterpiece.
