光源氏が須磨へ退去していた頃、後見を失った末摘花（すえつむはな）の生活は困窮を極めていた。邸は荒れ果て、召使いも去っていったが、末摘花は宮家の誇りを失わずにいた。
受領の妻となっている末摘花の叔母は、以前にこの宮家から軽く見られていたことを恨み、末摘花を自分の娘の女房にしようとするが、末摘花は応じない。腹いせに末摘花が頼りにしていた乳母子の侍従を連れて行ってしまうのだった。
翌春、源氏は荒れ果てた末摘花の邸の前を偶然通りかかる。末摘花が今も変わらず自分を待ち続けていることを知った源氏はこれまで疎遠になっていたことを悔やみ、末摘花に終生の世話をすることを約束する。そして、二年後には、末摘花を東の院に迎えるのだった。
