光源氏の次の正妻について世間が噂するなか、六条御息所は源氏が引き止めるのを振り切って、娘の斎宮とともに伊勢へ下ることを決意した。
桐壺院が崩御し、権勢は政敵の右大臣側へと移っていった。藤壺は東宮の後見として源氏を頼りにしていたが、険悪な政情の中で源氏との関係が発覚することを極度に恐れ、源氏がしのんで訪ねてきても固く拒むのであった。桐壺院の一周忌に藤壺は突然出家し、尼となる。
源氏は、今は尚侍として朱雀帝の寵愛を受けている朧月夜を忘れがたく思い、ひそかに逢瀬を重ねていた。しかしある晩、その現場を右大臣に見つかってしまう。それを聞いた太后弘徽殿（こきでん）は激怒し、源氏追放の策を企てるのであった。
