春の夜のもやにそひたる月ならん
手枕かしぬ我が仮ぶしに

二月、紫宸殿（ししんでん）で桜の宴があった。頭中将（とうのちゅうじょう）たちとともに披露した光源氏の詩と舞はすばらしく、人々を驚嘆させたが、藤壺の心は複雑であった。
宴の後、源氏は藤壺にひと目会いたいと藤壺の御殿の辺りをうかがい歩くが入り込む隙もなく、そのまま弘徽殿の細殿付近へとさまよい歩く。そこで「朧月夜に似るものぞなき」と口ずさむ女性と出会い、一夜を共にする。
素性も分からぬまま扇を取り交わして別れるが、この女性は東宮に入内することになっている右大臣の姫君朧月夜（おぼろづきよ）なのではないかと源氏は思う。
源氏も朧月夜もお互いを思い焦がれていた折、右大臣家で藤の宴が催された。招かれた源氏は、そこで朧月夜と再会するのであった。
