光源氏 二八～二九歳

われのみ神に奉るらん

都に返り咲いた光源氏は内大臣として政界の実権を握るようになる。朱雀帝は退位し、元服した東宮が冷泉帝（れいぜいてい）となって即位した。
明石の君が女児を出産したとの知らせを受け、源氏は喜び、すぐれた乳母や祝いの品を明石へ送る。そんな源氏の様子に紫の上は嫉妬する。
秋になり、源氏は住吉へお礼参りに出た。毎年の恒例行事として同じくその場へ来合わせていた明石の君は、源氏一行のきらびやかな様子を見て、自身の身分の低さを嘆き、引き返してしまうのだった。
六条御息所（ろくじょうのみやすどころ）は娘の斎宮（さいぐう）とともに帰京し、病に伏していたが、源氏に娘の後見を頼んで世を去る。源氏は藤壺（ふじつぼ）の助言を得て、斎宮を養女にしたうえで、冷泉帝へ入内させることにした。
