 初瀬(はつせ)の長谷寺に御参詣の折、宇治に中宿りされた匂宮は、八の宮の姫君に感心を抱き、たびたびお手紙を差し上げるようになります。
行く末が御心配だった姫君たちの後見を薫の君に託し、八の宮は、念仏三昧の勤行のため阿闍梨の山寺へ入りました。が、体調を悪くされ、満行(まんぎょう)の後も山を下りることなくそのまま亡くなってしまいました。
