＜あらすじ＞
深川材木町の「川卯」という居酒屋でその男が語ったのは、昔に生き別れたおつうという娘との悲恋だった。
幼い頃の彼はおつうに惹かれていた。いつかはおつうを嫁にもらおうと決意した彼は左官になろうと思った。火事の尽きない江戸では仕事が絶えずあり、実入りのいい仕事だったからだ。彼が十七、おつうが十四になり器量よしに育った頃、蜆河岸で互いの気持ちを確かめ合った。
だが三年後、おつうは相模屋という質屋の息子に見染められた。二人は駆け落ちしようとしたが、おつうの将来を思った彼は踏みとどまり、おつうの荷から形見代わりに一本のかんざしを抜き取り、江戸を去ったのだ。名古屋と大阪で仕事を軌道に乗せた彼だったが、おつう以外の女を女房にすることが出来なかった。せめてその行方を知りたくて江戸にもどってきたと言うのだ。
その男に対して店の常連の安さんは口をはさんだ。
「そいつは知らねえほうがいいだろうぜ」
安さんから語られたのは、おつうにまつわる真実だった……。
