「左内ゆかりの者」と名乗り、左内の遺骸を引取りにやってきた者の中に一人の娘がいた。娘は福井藩士、喜多勘蔵の二女で香苗と言い、香苗は左内の三つ下のまた従兄妹で、幼なじみでもあった。
因幡守穆清に「従容として時世の詩を認め、静かな微笑さえ見せながら、帰するが如く」という左内の最期の様子を聞いた香苗は、自分のよく知っている筈の左内との姿に違和感を感じる……。
