亡き人の手なれの笛に寄りもこし
夢のゆくへの寒き夜半(よわ)かな

柏木（かしわぎ）の法要に光源氏は格別の志を示す。事情を知らぬ柏木の父の大臣は源氏の厚意に感激するが、改めて亡き子を思い、悲しみを新たにする。
女三の宮（にょさんのみや）が若くして尼になったことを無念に思う源氏であったが、日に日に成長していく薫（かおる）の高貴な美貌に目をひかれ、自分の子らしくも思えると、薫を見守るのであった。
夕霧（ゆうぎり）は女二の宮（にょにのみや））とその母一条御息所（いちじょうのみやすどころ）を見舞う。一条御息所は柏木遺愛の横笛を夕霧に贈るが、その夜、夕霧の夢に柏木が現れ、笛を伝える人は他にあると言う。
夕霧は源氏を訪ね、柏木の意味深な遺言と横笛の話をする。源氏は柏木の笛を預かるが、遺言に心当たりはないと言うのだった。
