ふぢばなのもとの根ざしは知らねども
枝をかはせる白と紫

夕霧の縁談の噂に気をもんでいた内大臣はついに譲歩を決意して藤の宴に夕霧を招き、雲居雁との結婚を許した。
明石の姫君が東宮に嫁ぐ日が近づいてきた。紫の上はこれを機に、明石の姫君の後見役を生母である明石の君に交代するよう取り計らう。後見交代の際に、初めて対面した二人の夫人は互いの人格を認め合う。明石の姫君は美しく立派に成長し、東宮から寵愛されるのだった。
ことがすべて順調に実現した光源氏は出家するのによい時期だと考える。翌年四十歳を迎える源氏のために、さまざまな祝いの準備がなされていた。
六条院に冷泉帝が行幸した。そこに朱雀院（すざくいん）も招待され、異例の盛儀となった。美しい紅葉のもと、舞や音楽を楽しみながら、源氏は感慨にひたるのであった。
