Only if you enjoy Ayoade's delivery

The content is generally good and well written. However, it does get boring in the middle. Ayoade's delivery is particularly enjoyable.

Enjoyable, yet still completely forgettable

As a fan of Richard Ayoade I was excited for this book, especially after reading good book about that awful Gwyneth Paltrow movie. This book is absurd, enjoyable at times, but ultimately forgettable.

This is a must for any true cinefile

Ayoade on Ayoade is a remarkable exploration of cinema and a stirring meditation on what it is to be Ayoade. There were moments where the author made me feel that I myself was Ayoade. My life will never be the same after listening to this audio book.

Funny but not enjoyable as an audio book.

I really enjoyed the author's humor but I got tired of the premise of the book very quickly. This just doesn't provide the story experience I'm looking for in an audiobook.

Pretty entertaining

I think this audiobook is pretty funny and entertaining. I enjoyed the satyric (sometimes almost cynic) view on film and the industry behind it. Also, Ayoade is doing a great job reading the book and the footnotes. Though, several parts don't really work in this format.

The only book worth reading, or listening to.

Ayoade spoke to my soul in his still small voice, and I answered, here I am. My life has been changed forever. For some reason though, I suspect the print version is even better.

Loneliness is Individual. Horniness is Universal.

At its core this is a story about a fun, horny guy trying to get laid. Wait...no, even with the amount of Ayoade on Ayoade action that this has, its a fun, surreal look at himself, movie tropes and more.

Audio Supreme to book

Despite Richard Ayoade correcting the listeners several times that this was meant to be read originally, I find it adds a layer of humor that would be otherwise lost when delivered by the signature tone we all know and love, and decidedly led us to purchase this book of Mr Ayoade (with the added bonus of special guest performance by Jessie Eisenberg as his agent ).

Hilarious!

It was just absurd enough to keep me laughing but not so much to get me lost. I really love Ayoade's comedy

Woeful

Unfunny and irritating in the extreme and I write as someone who likes Ayoade. Second half slightly redeems itself but I very nearly gave up on this after the first couple of chapters. The interviews where Ayoade interviews Ayoade are particularly tiresome.

I love Richard Ayoade...but

There are some fantastic moments and when he jumps out of the book to talk to the listeners he is classic Ayoade - it just didn’t click with me It’s decent just not great :(

If you like Ayoade you’ll love this

Subtitle: you’re probably going to have to like Ayoade to love this! I wouldn’t suggest it to a newcomer: it relies heavily on already being in on the joke. It is, of course, very clever and funny and cleverly funny. Maybe a bit... too long? (*Runs away, slams a door, hides under the bed.)

Man in brown corduroy suit talks to himself

If the first sign of madness is talking to yourself then the second sign of madness must surely be making a recording of you taking to yourself. What that quite says about someone who is prepared to hand over their hard earned coin to listen to somebody talking to themselves I do not know and it is probably not a good idea to dwell on it too long.

Despite what tallish author of this work Richard Ayoade says, I think it works best as an audio book as you can actually hear him speak and he adopts different voices for the interviewer Ayoade, the interviewee Ayoade and yet another voice for what are presumably the footnotes that explain why Ayoade thinks this does not work as an Audio Book. What Ayoade overlooks, however when he tries to explain that the listener will not be able to appreciate the subtle vision joke of, for example the "Prologu(e)mbryo" section that Ayoade takes great pains to explain to the listener in the third Ayoade footnote voice is that the listener is able to glance at the screen of the device that is playing the recording (in my case the display in my car) which shows the name of the section being played.

There is more to this book than mere self reflection on Ayoade's film career though. The appendix includes much of Ayoade's writings and musings on various subjects including open letters, a quiz, some FAQs and some "did you know" type facts (some of which i suspect are not actually true). A special mention too to Danny to the D Deville who deserves his own book.

weird!

So I am a big Ayoade fan and this book is very much in 2 parts. The first part is very Ayoade and has to be listened as an audio book whereas the 2nd half is like a drug fuelled hedonistic dream. I'm not even sure what I have just listened to.

He just goes on and on and on, with nothing interesting to say. I had to stop listening after a painful first hour. A few laughs, but not worth it.

Okay so I get it and I know it's ironic and stuff

This would be funny if it was shorter, but, after a while, once you get the whole idea it just repeats in the same way. Like the guy but too much of this is like eating too much cheese, great at first, then gets a bit samey and ultimately you start wondering why you bought so much cheese. Not that this book is cheesy. But he should make another film - his other two where good.

Daft

Funny, daft, nonsensical and at times a bit annoying. If you like him in IT Crowd it's full on more of the same.
