About this listen
We’re joined by Ancient DNA specialist, Professor Greger Larson, of Oxford University who discusses how his work helps map our relationships with both cats and dogs in line with our own human evolution. Explaining that cats were thought to have been domesticated around 10,000 years ago, when in fact the latest science suggests that cats began their close relationship with humans only 4,000 years ago. He explains their evolution and why the ancient Egyptians thought of cats as deities. Greger explains that we now can appreciate why cats really have maintained their wild side compared to dogs. Prof Greger has also worked on the discovery of the oldest know dog dating back to circa 13,000 to 15,000 years ago. The exact point in time that wolves became dogs is still unclear and some argue it’s a vital missing link. However Prof Greger could have an announcement brewing that might just change this.
