About this listen

It’s late October and the air smells like wet leaves and cold metal. A truck stop diner off Route 9, somewhere between Harlow and dust. The waitress is named Della, and she knows the regulars by their coffee orders — black with a headache, one sugar and a lie. I stopped there because the gas light had been on for twelve miles and my head was full of static. But the man in booth four didn’t order anything. He just sat there, watching the door, his hands flat on the cracked vinyl tabletop like he was holding it down. Della told me not to look at him. She didn’t say why. I looked anyway. His eyes were the color of a bruise you can’t remember getting. He smiled, and his teeth were all wrong — too many, or maybe too sharp, or maybe just the wrong shape for a human mouth. He didn’t blink. He didn’t breathe. And then he spoke, and his voice came from the bathroom, from the jukebox, from the static of the kitchen radio. He said my name. Not the name I gave Della. My real name. The one I haven’t said out loud in years. This is the story of what I did after that, and what I found in the truck stop bathroom, and why I still check my back seat every time I get in the car.
