I stepped off the Greyhound at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere, somewhere west of the Pecos River. The air smelled like diesel and dust. I was the only one who got off. The man at the counter looked at me and said, 'You sure you want to go to Calico?' I didn't ask questions. I just nodded and walked out into the dark. But the girl I met there, the one in the diner with the blue eyes and the too-long fingernails—she knew something. She told me a story about the motel at mile 47, and about a man named Conrad who still checks in once a year. I didn't believe her until I saw the register. And I didn't believe the register until I saw the ghost light flickering from the window. This is the story of what I found at mile 47, and why I never took that bus again.
