June 1998. Luna is nineteen, housesitting for the Farrows on Beechwood Lane, a dead-end street in the hollows of Riddle County. The creek behind the house has been swollen for days, but on the third night, the water starts speaking. At first it's just a rhythm against the bank, a child's skipping song. Then it's a girl's voice calling for her mother — a girl who drowned in that same creek twenty years ago, according to the neighbor. Luna hears her from the back porch, sees the shape in the current, watches the water climb the basement steps. By morning the creek is still, but the basement door is open, and the carpet is wet with mud and creek stones and something that glows faintly in the dark.
