Once Maria calms down, Karl explains the truth behind his background and how he speaks English with an American accent despite being born in Germany. He reveals that while Miguel was stationed in Germany as part of the Green Berets, he fell in love with the culture and took language classes taught by Helga Hoffmann. The two bonded, fell in love, and eventually married. However, Helga hid the fact that she had leukemia which was in remission. Her leukemia later returned with a vengeance after Carl was born, leading to her tragic passing.

Following Helga's death, her parents stepped in to help raise Carl in Germany, while Miguel returned to the United States and eventually married Maria. Miguel chose to keep his past a secret out of fear that the painful memories would lead Maria to reject him. Years later, Karl discovered old letters from his father, located Miguel’s sister, and eventually tracked Maria down in New York to introduce himself.

Upon hearing the full story, the forgiving Maria chooses not to hold a grudge against her sister-in-law and instead warmly embraces Karl into the family.Looking ahead, Caleb promises that The Jake and Elaine Show will return to a mix of comedy and drama, with an upcoming spotlight on Elaine’s sister, Amparo, and her troublesome brothers.
