It was the tail end of February, the kind of cold that gets into the bones and stays there. I was working a double at the Wagon Wheel Diner on Route 17, just outside of Millbrook. The place was empty except for a man in a tan coat who sat in the back booth and never ordered. He just watched the specials board above the counter. Around 2 a.m., the board flickered and the letters rearranged themselves into a message that wasn't on any menu. The cook didn't see it. The waitress didn't see it. But the man in the tan coat smiled, and I felt something cold that had nothing to do with the weather.
