I met him at dawn near the old grain elevator, his truck bed full of cold patch and gravel, his hands shaking. He told me about the sounds—like something breathing up through the asphalt—and about the woman in a blue dress who stood at the same spot every night, waiting for a ride that never came. He never saw her face, but he saw her shoes: white, clean, untouched by dust. By the time the first frost came, he had filled seventeen holes. On the eighteenth, he didn't come back. His truck was still there, engine running, the bed empty. I found his notebook in the glove box. The last entry said: 'She pointed. I looked. The road is not a road.' I don't know what he meant.
