Numbers 31: Moses is charged to avenge Israel, then die. He acts without calculation. The episode examines what that costs when others chose otherwise.
Parshat Matos opens with a charge. Moses is told to avenge Israel against the Midianites, and only then to die. Every day he delays is a day of his own life extended.
He does not delay. He speaks to the people at once. He does not weigh his own life. He does not weigh the benefits of Israel remaining under his leadership longer. The Torah calls the response praiseworthy.
Joshua would later face a similar test and calculation. That calculation cost him ten years of life. The episode reads the difference and asks what it means to serve within a script one did not write.
