Veer Savarkar staged an attempt to escape from the steamship SS Morea and seek asylum in France while the ship was docked in the port of Marseilles. He was sentenced to Kaala Pani or cellular jail, where he faced inhuman British atrocities. After his release from the cellular jail in 1921, Veer Savarkar developed the Hindu nationalist political ideology of Hindutva while confined at Ratnagiri jail in 1922. He dedicated rest of his life for social reforms and welfare of the people who were looked down upon post his release from the Ratnagiri jail.
