Becoming a Barbarian is a follow-up to Donovan's cult hit, The Way of Men. Good, modern, civilized Western men today are expected to think like "citizens of the world" - obligated to everyone and no one. Natural, meaningful tribal connections have been substituted with synthetic, disposable consumer identities. Without a sense of who they are and what group they have a place in, modern men are becoming increasingly detached, disoriented, vulnerable, and ever more easily manipulated.
Becoming a Barbarian attacks the emasculated emptiness of life in the modern West and shows men how to think tribally again. It reveals the weaknesses of universalistic thinking, and challenges listeners to become the kind of men who could go all-in and devote their lives to one group of people above all others.

Great Follow Up to Way of Man
some may say there are "racist" undertones to this book however as a black man I understand that he is talking about "Men" and with Jack Donovan being a white man he is commenting on the state of his assigned racial tribe. Do not let this detour you. This is still a great book that ANY man should consume.

Great book for a white supremacist
I had high hopes for this book. I've listened to The Way of Men and a couple of the authors interviews and thought he had some interesting ideas. But I had to stop half through this book. To sum it up, the collective, commercial Empire has taken over and everyone is sheeple and are slaves and live in a maternalistic, multicultural society where everyone is valued and so no one is valued. I'm discouraged by social networks that destroy relationships and I was hoping this book would show a path in the direction of creating a tribe to belong to, but it shows how to create a racist/bigoted group instead.

How to justify hate and avoid acknowledging your bias
This is an ideal read for white males who want to justify their prejudice and lack of empathy. It basically sums up as: "the world needs more racism, ableism and misogyny, because THAT is the way of a real man. Any one who says otherwise has been turned weak by the greed of the Empire and the influence of women in power."
While listening, I could only think: "How I wish the world was as open and accepting as Donovan criticizes it to be!"

A neccesary awakening for the modern male
I loved it.My most memorable part was the in depth criticism of the modern male citizen and description of the empire of nothing.A must read.

Made me think. Made me laugh. Made me act.
If you have delicate sensibilities, this book is not for you. If you feel that what has become the societal norm just doesn't fit, you might want to give this a read.

My favorite audiobook thus far
I have read lots of books and I have almost a solid eight days of listening time just on audible, but this one is my favorite. I’ve listened to it three times and I have also listened to The Way of Men and A More Complete Beast. This is also the first time I’ve reviewed a book but I felt obligated.

white supremacy in diguse
this book is a joke, and It speaks to the authors lack of worldly experience. the performance was good but the ideas discussed are extremely shortsighted and are a reflection of the echo-chamber environment that the internet provides. I'd love to see these ideas discussed on Joe Rogan's podcast because honestly I don't think they'd hold ground when questioned.

interesting view on the world
I personally love this book. it's hillarious and speaks a lot of truth that people aren't willing to face up to.
take it with a pinch of salt mind... very aggressively delivered and I believe that is the point.
having a close, tight knit group of people who support each other and work towards common goals or with common values is definately something that helps me in my life and something I'm going to be building plenty more of thanks to this book!

Jack Donovan gets better and better with each book. Great reading by the author in which you can hear his passion for the subject matter.
Excellent follow up to The Way of Men. Both recommended.

Heavy.
A search for the borders of what is and isn't acceptable in society today. Likely to draw "black sheep" or "sigma" types. Pick a lane and stick to it basically. Sláinte/Skol from a wannabe Celt!

What a book! Pure mental stimulation
Awesome book full of great philosophies. Very eye opening and thought provoking. looking forward to the last book of the trilogy! Even if you wouldnt agree with Jack Donovons point of view, I would say it is worth a read!

Start a tribe and roam outside the empire
There is a lot of dangerous talk in this book and the previous one, which makes them engaging to listen to. It paints a good picture of the modern barbarian mentality. I imagine many will dismiss a number of the ideas as immoral, or fantasies that would land one in embarrassing social circumstances or prison. To spiritually rebel against the theatrically termed 'empire of nothing' is likely to be a one way door, and so would require substantial conviction.
That being said, there is wisdom in here that is immediately applicable. For example, I'm wondering how much value there is in writing this review for someone I've never met, when it is simply one more thing drawing me away from engaging with a pack or tribe 'in person', basically spending meaningful time with my friends?

sharp, garbbing and fun
jack donovan delves deeper into the concept of "the empire of nothing" (the global community) and the implications of putting it before your own tribe, and the repercussions of such. a good follow up to the classic "the way of men". Donavan is both entertaining and insightful in this sequel which surpassed my expectations.
looking forward to "a more complete beast"

Becoming a Villian
TLDR: the author foolishly sees society of only two camps. fools and villians. he wrongly insists that one must be a villian if he does not wish to be a fool
the author has a twisted morality in which there is no right and wrong, there is only victims and perpetrators. this book is not entirely useless, it is useful to listen to it because one can easier affirm what he does believe in by acknowledging what he does not believe it
the author begins each of his arguments by (correctly) stating things the fools of the world believe in (many of them left wind beliefs), and then stating things the villians of the world believe in (many of those things are from the far authoritarian wing) and insisting that those are the only two options and it is better to be a villian than a fool. and certainly it is true that to be a fool is the worst option
but to suggest that there is no third option is ludacris and disingenuous. certainly one can be both mighty and moral. certainly one can be both unconquerable and non-aggressive. liberty is a movable coal, conquest is not. defence is necessary to liberty whilst an empire is not
the author also insults the peace and prosperity brought by free markets (ironically by pointing out the flaws of government intervention in the market) yet whilst also romanticising the horror of war as somehow mankinds glorious purpose on earth
